About us
Who we are
The Practice
Our team are here to help, and our clinics cater for a wide range of health concerns – from minor ailments that occur to specialist management of long-term conditions.
We have face to face, telephone and online consultations available on a daily basis for our patients. Appointments can be made on the day for acute needs, or up to 6 weeks in advance for planned care. We have extended our surgery times to accommodate our working professional patients who need evening or Saturday appointments.
As a modern practice, we use the latest technology. Our patients can book appointments or order a repeat prescription online. This means you can now do a lot of things from the comfort of your home. However, our doors and phone lines remain open so please contact our reception team should you prefer.
We serve over 18 500 patients. Although we are a large practice we strive to deliver the very best care, and do our best to accommodate the needs of all our patients.
The surgery is part of Wandle Primary Care Network, which is made up of Wandsworth Medical Centre and four other local GP surgeries.
The Wandle Primary Care Network was formed in 2019 and serves a patient population of 55,000 We took our name from the River Wandle, which runs through our catchment area and into the Thames. Together, the primary care network is able to provide a bigger range of services including physiotherapist, paramedics, psychologist, social prescriber and a well-being coach.
We are a teaching practice
Equipping future doctors
Wandsworth Medical Centre is committed to equipping future doctors with the skills and knowledge they will require to provide excellent levels of care for their patients. It also ensures that we have a deep culture of education with activities and meetings at the surgery to ensure that we too keep up-to-date and are always learning! Our trainees are supervised and supported and it is very helpful when people are willing to see the doctors in training. Any students or doctors in training seeing patients are always under the direct supervision of one of the senior doctors.
Specialty Trainees (GPST2/GPST3 Doctors)
These are qualified doctors who have had some years of hospital experience and are choosing a career as a GP. They need to spend time in general practice in their final years as part of their training to become a GP. We regularly invite GPST3 doctors to join the practice and they join us for a year. GPST3 doctors have in the past been called GP Registrars. GPST2 doctors are in their penultimate year of training and are with us for six or twelve months before moving to a different practice for their GPST3 yea
Foundation Trainees (FY2 Doctors)
These are doctors who have been working for about a year since qualifying but who have not yet started training in a particular specialty. We regularly invite FY2 doctors to join us at the practice to experience working under supervision as a GP for periods of four months.
Medical Students
These are medical students from Imperial College London and will be sitting in with us as they too may be asked to come to the practice.
Video recording
Training may involve video recording of consultations but only with your full consent. This is always confidential and only used for specific educational needs of that trainee. You are given the option to change your mind about giving consent at the end of the consultation.
We do require your assistance. How can you help?
- Be patients with our learners if they appear not to be confident
- Consider volunteering for some of the sessions if approached
- Give feedback, both positive and negative about the care you have received from the learners
Being a Training Practice brings several benefits to the Practice
- More doctors and therefore more appointments to offer to patients
- Explaining medical practice reminds us if the essentials and encourages us in our work
- Keeps us up to date with best practice
- Trainees are generally very thorough and knowledgeable
- Gives us better links with the local hospitals as the trainees have recently worked there
Practice information
All patients, including children will have a named, accountable GP. All newly registered patients will be allocated their named, accountable GP within 21 days of registration.
If you express a preference as to which GP you would like to have assigned, the practice will make reasonable efforts to accommodate this request.
Your assigned GP is responsible for your overall care at the practice. Please contact the practice if you wish to know who your allocated GP is.
Although you will have an allocated GP you are able to book appointments as normal with any available GP.
Online Booking
You can book an appointment by phone, online or at reception. We book appointments at 10-minute intervals and up to 12 weeks in advance.
If you want to see a particular doctor please ask. It is usually better to see the same doctor for follow-up but if your problem is urgent you may need to see another doctor. All our doctors share the responsibility for assisting you with your health.
If you need an appointment outside working hours, e.g. evening or weekend please note that we offer out of hours appointments from Monday to Friday between 18:30 – 20:00 and on Saturdays 09:00 – 12:00 and 13:00 – 16:00.
Please be on time for your appointment. If you do not make your appointment in time, you may have to reschedule.
Urgent Appointments or Advice
So that all our patients can see or speak to a doctor for any urgent concerns we have an on-call doctor every day.
Please call us before 10:00 Monday to Friday to speak to the on-call doctor for anything that cannot wait for a routine appointment. You will either be put straight through or will be called back as soon as possible. If you need to be seen, the doctor will arrange an appointment for you – usually later the same morning. If we can assist you without you needing to come in, we will do our best to do that for you.
If you call after 10:00 it will usually not be possible to see you the same day as the rest of the day is taken with booked appointments, home visits and other urgent duties.
Cancellations
If you cannot attend an appointment, please call us on 0203 006 2741 as soon as possible so other patient can use it or alternatively, you can use the on-line access to cancel your appointment.
Check with reception if we have your phone details up to date and enjoy faster and easier booking!
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) makes sure hospitals, care homes, dental and GP surgeries, and all other care services in England provide people with safe, effective, compassionate and high-quality care, and encourages them to make improvements where possible.
They do this by inspecting services and publishing the results on their website: www.cqc.org.uk
You can use the results to help you make better decisions about the care you, or someone you care for, receives.
Our CQC Inspection
Our practice is inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to ensure we are meeting essential standards of quality and safety.

What do we mean by “Connecting Your Care”?
We are working with South West London Health and Care Partnership to improve the way we connect your care across south west London. Soon, healthcare professionals will be able to access your records from other NHS services when you need them to. This will make it quicker and easier for you when you visit your GP or hospital.
At the moment, each care organisation has a different system for managing your records, and there is no way for the information to be shared electronically when it is needed by doctors and nurses.
Connecting your Care means that people involved in your care such as your GP, hospital doctors and nurses, will be able to immediately see important information about you through a secure system, to help them make the best decisions about your care.
In the future, we will also be working with other health and social care providers to share a more detailed care record for you, which will include the treatment you receive from community NHS services, mental health services and social care services. This will allow everyone involved in your care to be able to make the best decisions for your treatment.
Do I have a choice?
If you are happy for your information to be shared in this way, then you don’t need to do anything. The Connecting your Care system will be phased in over the next few months.
If you do not want your information to be shared, you have the right to opt-out by visiting www.swlondon.nhs.uk/connectingyourcare and downloading the opt-out form.
You can also pick up an opt-out form from your GP practice or the Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS) at your local hospital.

More information
The average pay for GPs working in Wandsworth Medical Centre in the last financial year was £93,032 before tax and National Insurance. This is for: 4 full time GPs and 6 part time GPs who worked in the practice for more than six months.
“NHS England require that the net earnings of doctors engaged in the practice is publicised by 31 March 2019 at the latest. However, it should be noted that the prescribed method of calculating earnings is potentially misleading because it takes no account of how much time doctors spend working in the practice and should not be used for any judgement about GP earnings, nor to make any comparisons with other practices.”
Thank you for your interest in joining the team at Wandsworth Medical Centre, we are always looking for talented people to join the practice team.
